Is Natural Treatment For Depression Suitable For You?

Defined Tag:

Many people are increasingly seeking alternative or natural treatments for depression, despite the availability of antidepressant medication. This is mainly because such an approach is viewed as safer and having lower risk, than the antidepressant drugs which may have side effects on some people. Even though some of these natural cures for depression have proven to be effective, it’s still advisable to seek the guidance from your doctor before using it.

One popular choice of natural treatment for depression is using herbal remedies. For instance, there is the flowering tops of the plant called St John’s Wort; also known as Hypericon, Klamath Weed and Goat Weed. This is a traditional herbal remedy for mental illness, but has also been used as a sedative, a balm against bites and wounds, and a pain killer. Modern herbalists recommend it for use against anxiety, depression and sleep disorders and apply it in the form of a tea or fusion or as a tablet. Medical Scientists are divided about its effect, some agreeing that it may serve some use but others arguing that it is no more effective than a placebo.

Homeopathy is a form of medicine built on the theory that only a small amount of substance is needed to promote healing. For example, a nettle extract may be prescribed for a skin rash, but this nettle extract will be so dilute that very little in the way of nettle remains. However, this small amount of nettle extract is still able to promote the body’s own immune system. Do not be surprised that some GPs are trained homeopaths when you visit them for treatment.

Another natural treatment for depression that you may consider is Chinese acupuncture. This form of traditional treatment has been found to be effective for relieving pain on most parts of your body. Acupuncture is increasingly being used in the UK and there are a number of doctors trained in acupuncture as well as Western medicine. However, it has not been scientifically proven effective for depression.

In addition, there are also newer forms of natural treatment for depression, such as yoga, aromatherapy and biofeedback. However, one should consider the risks versus the benefits of such a treatment. One such important risk is the potential delayed treatment of the depression. For a mild depression, this risk may not be too great, but for a more severe depression with suicidal thoughts, it could be a fatal risk.
